Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney's Claret silk faille with boned satin corset bodice, pleated cap sleeve, breast insert and back neckline, arced waist, tulip skirt with kick pleat, back zip. Shoulder cape has pleats radiating from stand collar, short pointed lappets, back with two gentle points, double edge front inset with gold satin. Tape label "Charles James 51". B-34, W-24, L-46. (Silk split edges of cape, 3 cuts in skirt back) good. Mrs. C. V. Whitney was born and raised in Plymouth OH and the sale of this garment benefits the Plymouth Area Historical Society. $18,000.

Claret wool with curved yoke, shawl collar and three quarter sleeve above princess seams, the wide flared skirt curving gracefully from above the knee in front to below the knee at back, black satin lining. Labels "William Popper from a Design by Charles James" and "I. Magnin & Co. California Seattle". An identical example of this coat can be found in "The Genius of Charles James" by Elizabeth Anne Coleman, page 153 pic 412 and U.S. "Vogue" September 1, 1952, page 181..
